Last week, we lost an incredible novelist. Ursula Le Guin passed away at age 88 in her Portland home. Besides sci-fi and fantasy, she wrote poetry, creative nonfiction, and literary fiction. I honestly believe she will go down in history as one of the greatest writers, literary or otherwise, of the 20th century.
Sixteen when I wrote it, seventeen when I sold it, eighteen when it came out.
Did your age factor into marketing? Only very slightly and occasionally. Simon Pulse, August I never liked it. There is always going to be a first book for all writers, and many many many will not be as enamored with it as they are with their most recent stuff.
Simon Pulse, April Do you think that your age factored into getting a book deal? So make of that what you will. Being twenty-two holla, Taylor Swift with 9 contracted books and 6 on shelves is still pretty weird to a lot of people.
Roaring Brook Press, April The style is different, on a sentence-by-sentence level. I write fantasy and stuff with female main characters now, and those are things I never thought were for me.
Do you have any advice for kids who want to be teen authors? What I would say more than anything is to not be so anxious about the passage of time.
Want it tomorrow for as many tomorrows as it takes. Do you have any advice for first time authors currently in their teens?
Way to go on being a first-time author. It was my 7th grade English assignment, so I was 12 when I wrote it, 13 when I signed the contract, and 14 by the time it finally came out. I was very up front about that in my cover letter.
In fact, I considered it a selling point. Scholastic Paperbacks, Reissue Edition, May Certainly my age was central to all the blurbs and author bios created for the book. If there were publishing people who thought less of me because of my age, I had the advantage of being too naive to realize it.
It was a little awkward to be the youngest person in every room, but that was kind of an education too. I developed a firm handshake and learned to look people in the eye. One of the huge advantages of starting young is you get to skip the part of your career where you drive a taxi or wait tables while you wait for your books to become profitable.
I was lucky enough to cruise through those years as a high school student. Well, my first book was published inand I turned 20 in Of course, it took a while to develop the perspective and distance to see that! Some major style points have persisted from my teen author days as well.
I continue to love a fast-paced story, often told with a lot of humor. The figure seems about right. From the Wall Street Journal article Fast-Paced Best Seller: Author Russell Blake Thrives on Volumes “In , self-published books accounted for 32% of the top selling e-books on Amazon each week, on average.”.
Designers who love science fiction (and don't we all?) will go bananas over Shedroff and Noessel's delightful and informative book on how interaction design in sci-fi movies informs interaction design in the real world.
Here’s my somewhat radical idea: Writers don’t need to know who their audience is. And, yes, I know this goes entirely against popular advice, which encourages (even insists) that beginning authors must know their audience.
I’ve probably even said basically that somewhere or other on this site. A database of literary agents for science fiction (sci-fi) writers and novelists. These agents accept queries from new writers. What turns people into science-fiction fans? Many enter through the gateway of Star Trek, an early s television series "set on the worlds visited by a giant Spaceship, the U.S.S.
Enterprise, and on the ship feelthefish.com crew is on a mission to explore new worlds and 'to boldly go where no man has gone before.'". Leading science experts, writers and filmmakers help us decide the best sci-fi films ever made.
